Columns are supported by fixed supports or hinged at both ends. They are used in concrete or steel structures.

Struts are supported by hinged or pinned joints at both ends. They are used in truss construction.

Columns undergo failure due to buckling.

Strut undergoes failure due to crushing.

Columns have a higher slenderness ratio.

Struts have a lesser slenderness ratio compared to columns.

 The load-carrying capacity of columns and struts is dependent on the length of the member, the cross-sectional area of the member, and the type of support.
