What is Martian Concrete? Concrete From Mars

Martian concrete is a futuristic concrete material that is invented from the materials present in the planet Mars. Martian concrete unlike normal concrete do not require water for their formation. Instead they are formed by melting sulphur and combined with Martian soil present in Mars.

Objectives for Creating Martian Concrete

The requirement for safe habitat in mars require high quality buildings to live and work for humans during their space journeys. In order to protect humans during this journey, a safe location must be made. Lin Wan and pals at the Northwestern University worked on Martian concrete.

Water is a precious resource in red planet. So, use of normal concrete for any development in Mars is not imaginable nor sustainable.

Composition of Martian Concrete

As mentioned above, the key material used for making Martian concrete is sulphur. The concept behind this is that when sulphur is heated to 240 degree celsius it becomes liquid. This is mixed with Martian soil which acts as the aggregate and finally let it cool. Here, the sulphur solidifies by binding the aggregate to finally form Martian Concrete.

Martian Soil in Mars

As per the researchers, the ratio of sulphur to Martian soil must be 1:1.
