Plumb Bob for Construction and Surveying

A plumb bob or a plummet can be defined as a pointed weight attached to the end of the string which is used to determine the vertical reference line. The reference line is called a plumb. 


Plumb is defined as the vertical equivalent to a spirit level. It is a tool that has been used for thousands of years, dating back to Ancient Egypt.


Objectives of a Plumb Bob


The main objective of the plumb bob is to determine the nadir, which is the local vertical direction pointing towards the gravity.
  1. Transfer the points to the ground
  2. Make the ranging poles vertical
  3. Transfer the points in a linear range to the ground
  4. To centre theodolites, compass, plane table, and other surveying equipment.
