The process begins at the foundation. A reinforced concrete pedestal is prepared, and anchor bolts are embedded into it. These bolts are arranged with the help of a template plate to ensure they are straight and in the exact position where the steel column will be fixed.
At the bottom of every steel column, a base plate is welded. This plate distributes the heavy loads of the column onto the foundation. When erecting, the base plate is carefully placed over the anchor bolts. Workers use leveling nuts or shims to adjust the plate so the column will stand perfectly vertical.
With the foundation ready, the steel column is lifted into place—usually by a crane on large sites, or with manual hoists for smaller sections. The column is lowered carefully onto the anchor bolts, and nuts are loosely tightened to hold it in place.
Alignment is checked using plumb lines, spirit levels, or lasers. Temporary supports or braces are often used until the frame is locked by beams.
Once the column is standing straight, the anchor bolts are fully tightened. Any gap between the base plate and the pedestal is filled with non-shrink grout. This ensures a solid contact surface and prevents settlement under loads.
After columns are fixed, they are connected with beams and bracings. These connections may be bolted or welded, depending on design. Together, the columns and beams form the steel skeleton of the structure, ready to carry floors, roofs, and walls.
Every stage in steel column construction demands accuracy. A misplaced anchor bolt, an uneven base plate, or poor grouting can cause alignment issues, delays, or even structural weaknesses. That’s why survey instruments, templates, and careful workmanship are so important.
