How to Prevent Warping of Doors?

The door installed once won't keep its original shape as time passes. Some distortions happen to them with varied climatic conditions. Warping of doors is the unequal movement of door fibers when the moisture within evaporates or when moisture enters the door. The rate of shrinking and warping of doors varies from one timber to timber.

How to Prevent Warping of Doors?

Warping is a phenomenon mostly dependent on the type of door material. Steel, aluminum, and fiberglass doors are less prone to warping issues. For industrial buildings, thick and durable doors are provided by fiberglass door suppliers with a void-free and rigid structure.

This article outlines the basic causes of warping in doors and ways to prevent it.

Causes of Door Warping

The main causes of the warping of doors are:

  1. The doors are installed at a humid location.
  2. The doors are finished only on one side.
  3. The climate is freezing and the use of the furnace starts to warp the doors installed.

Prevention of Door Warping

The following procedures can help prevent the warping of doors:
  1. Before installing doors, store them in the same environment and same room for about 36 hours.
  2. Before installation, apply two coats of finish over all six edges of the door and on the top and bottom portions of the doors.
  3. Always apply the sealer on the door by placing it on a flat surface with multiple support. Do not lean on the door and apply the coat.
  4. Taller doors are more prone to warping compared to shorter doors.
  5. Give a polish to the door twice a year.
  6. If possible, use a fiberglass door instead of a wooden door.
  7. Polyurethane sealant can be used to protect the door.
Properly designed wooden doors can prevent warping to some extent. A common door with vertical rails made of separate wood and laminated together with grain running in a different direction is a good choice. The stile of the door must be assembled in the same way so that the moisture gets into the door and it will bow in opposite direction by preventing the warping effect.
